Our History

History 5th anniversaryFounded in 1987, and incorporated as an association in 1994, Sutherland Shire Family Services Inc. has become a leading provider of innovative and professional services for families and children living in the Sutherland Shire and St George area.

From humble beginnings working from a small back-office in Miranda, Sutherland Shire Family Services has become a key support service for domestic violence victims and their children in the Sutherland Shire.

Commencing under the auspice of Crossroads Community Care, within months SSFS had expanded so exponentially it became evident a larger premise was necessary to meet community need.History Protest

Moving to Caringbah in 1990, with enhanced funding, three more family workers and a child care worker were employed to expand the services provided. After being left almost without any office space, the local police were incredibly generous allowing us to utilise rooms at the Police Citizens Youth Club at Sutherland, however this proved a temporary move. Finally finding a home in Jannali, construction of our multi-function centre took place, thanks to the generous and dedicated workers at Sutherland Shire Council.

Moving into new centre, SSFS was able to build on the programs offered and undertake a wider variety of community services, including Djanaba Occasional Care opening in January 1996. At this time SSFS also began providing respite child care to special needs children with parents experiencing very high stress levels and they themselves having often experienced trauma, but unable to afford childcare.

Since 1996 the Southern Sydney Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Service has been offering support to women and children seeking protection from domestic violence through the justice system. In 2002 the Youth and Family Project began operation, from which many of SSFS’ programs are co-ordinated, including the renowned Love Bites and BRIC program.

In 2012, SSFS opened their newly renovated and expanded centre in Jannali. Providing workers with much needed office space, the families we work with also noticed the improvement with families using the centre positively commenting on the improved reception and waiting area – with more group work space, counselling rooms, including children’s play therapy room.

We have a diverse team of intelligent, professional, supportive caring and dedicated staff who work have worked hard to transform SSFS into the organisation it is today – Providing quality services and facilitating change and promoting hope for families throughout the shire.
